Argyle Potholder

I finished this knit for my sister on Christmas day... a quick color knit that is fun to see come together, and the nifty inverse-reverse doesn't waste either of your colors!

CO 37 sts in MC
Row 1. *k1 in MC, leave on left needle, move both yarns forward, p1 in CC, move both yarns backward; repeat from * 18 times.
k1 in CC, leave on left needle, move both yarns forward, p1 in MC, move both yarns backward.
*k1 in MC, leave on left needle, move both yarns forward, p1 in CC, move both yarns backward; repeat from * 18 times.
(In Row 1, you are basically increasing one on each stitch but in a different color, and by purling. It is important to move both yarns backward or forward on each stitch or they will catch on the outside of your potholder. I held both yarns in my right hand at all times, using my fore and middle fingers to select the correct color before looping.)
Row 2 and every even row. *k1 in inverse pattern, move both yarns forward, p1 in pattern, move both yarns backward; repeat from * to end.
Row 3 and every odd row. *k1 in pattern, move both yarns forward, p1 in inverse pattern, move both yarns backward; repeat from * to end.

Row 49 is the last row in pattern.

Next Row. Using the MC, * k2tog, k2tog, BO; repeat from * to end.

Make 2-3 inch i-cord in MC and attach to corner in a loop.

Weave in ends.

Basic Gloves

I made these gloves with one skein fingering/sport weight yarn.

This pattern makes female size small gloves. Right-hand and left-hand gloves are knitted the exact same way. Make sure to arrange the thumbs in mirror images of each other (as pictured below) when you block the two gloves and you should have a matching pair.

CO 40 sts. Distribute evenly onto size 5 dpns. Join, and:

k2, p2 rib for 8 rows.

Knit in stockinette for 3.5 inches, or to desired length.

Knit 5 sts onto waste yarn, return 5 waste yarn sts to left hand needle, knit sts using regular yarn. Continue in stockinette for 13-14 rows.

Using two stitch holders, preserve the stitches somewhat evenly, with the front ends facing toward the waste yarn/thumb.

Turn piece so that the wrong (purl side) is facing outwards if it is not.

Forefinger:

Redistribute the first 8 sts (the five above the waste yarn sts plus 3 more), plus 4 sts from the other end (for 12 sts total onto 2 or 3 dpns. This will be the forefinger.

Continue in stockinette where you left off. When you reach the gap, CO two more sts, for a total now of 14 sts.

Continue knitting in the round to fit your forefinger, decreasing by k2tog at even intervals once or twice along the finger column if necessary.

When you reach desired length, k2tog at the beginning and midpoint of each row until 8 sts remain. Bind off using three needle bind off. Slip yarn ball through the loop after the last stitch, and move on to the next finger.

Middle finger:

Same as forefinger, except take next 5 sts off of each stitch holder and pull 2 sts from the forefinger base, for 12 sts total. Take yarn from the end of the forefinger, as if you are starting a new ball of yarn. CO two sts at the gap, for a total of 14 sts (as before).

Ring finger:

Same as middle finger. (Except you pull 2 sts from middle finger base, obviously.)

Pinky:

8 sts remain. Distribute onto 2 dpns, and pick up 2-3 sts from the ring finger base. Work in the round as before. When decreasing at the tip, decrease until 6 sts remain.

Thumb:

Pick up stitches above and below waste yarn (10) and remove waste yarn. Pick up an additional four stitches. Work in stockinette for approximately 2.5 inches, or desired length. k2tog at the beginning and midpoint of each row until 8 sts remain. Bind off using three needle bind off. Cut 4 inch tail and pull through to close loop.

Sew in ends, turn inside out, and block with thumbs on opposite sides to make a matching pair.

Smocked iPhone Cozy

CO 32 stitches with size 5 dpns. Distribute 10 stitches needle 1, 10 stitches needle 2, 12 stitches needle 3.

Join and:
*k2, p2; rep from * for 3 rows.

Knit all stitches on the next row.

(The pattern staggers the ribbing at the top and bottom edges to distinguish the cuff from the smocking pattern.)

Smocking Pattern:

Rows 1-3) *p2, k2; rep from *
Row 4) *p2, insert right hand needle between the 6th and 7th stitches on the left hand needle, loop yarn around the right hand needle and pull forward, place loop in front of the first stitch on the left hand needle, k2tog, k, p2, k2; rep from *
Rows 5-7) *p2, k2; rep from *
Row 8) p2, k2, *p2, insert right hand needle between the 6th and 7th stitches on the left hand needle, loop yarn around the right hand needle and pull forward, place loop in front of the first stitch on the left hand needle, k2tog, k, p2, k2; rep from * through to the start of the next row, completing a complete cycle of the smocking pattern, then finish that row in pattern.

Complete three full rounds of the smocking pattern.

Repeat Rows 1-7 once more.

Knit all stitches on the next row.

*k2, p2; rep from * for 3 rows.

BO all stitches in knit.

Turn the cozy inside out and align the edges so that the pattern will wrap the iPhone the way you prefer. With a tapestry needle, sew the bottom edge closed and sew in ends.

Create a 4-inch long i-cord. Sew i-cord onto the inside of the top of the cozy as pictured.

Sew button on opposite side to fit iPhone snugly in the cozy.

Pot Handle Cozy

This pattern owes a heavy debt to the Teacup Handle Sweater pattern by DaniDo.

My sister came up with this idea when we were talking about Mother’s Day gifts. I experimented a little before coming up with this design. It uses a weave pattern for the body. Cozies shown were knitted with Lion Brand Cotton-Ease in Terracotta, Violet, and Lime.

Body:

CO 28 with size 5 needles. Knit 4 rows in seed.

Row 1) k2, yo, k2tog, knit to the end of row
Row 2) k4, *p2, k4; rep from * (wrong side)
Row 3) p4, *k2, p4; rep from * (right side)
Row 4) Repeat Row 2
Row 5) Knit
Row 6) k1, *p2, k4; rep from *; knit final stitch
Row 7) p1, *k2, p4; rep from *; purl final stitch
Row 8) Repeat Row 6

Repeat Rows 1-8 two more times, or to desired length.

Then Repeat Row 1 only again once more.

Cap:

Knit 3 rows in seed.

(You should be starting the next row on the button-hole (yarn over) end. If not, knit one more row in seed to get there.) BO 8 sts, finish row in seed and join in the round on dpns to start end cap.

Distribute 7 sts needle 1, 7 sts needle 2, 6 sts needle 3. Knit two further rounds in seed.

Decrease as follows:
-k1, p1, p2tog, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, ssp, k1, p1, finish row in seed
-p1, k1, p2tog, k1, p1, k1, p1, ssk, p1, k1, finish row in seed
-k1, p1, p2tog, k1, p1, ssp, k1, p1, finish row in seed
-p1, k1, p2tog, ssk, p1, k1, finish row in seed

12 sts left. Make sure the cozy is wrong side out and do a three-needle bind off. Find cute buttons on Etsy.com and sew to match button holes (yarn-overs)!
